It must have been a problem for the writers— to move the plot along you need character-interactions and dialogue. It’s fun to go back and watch the Rockford Files episodes.... I never noticed it in the old days, but his episodes often revolved around phone calls with Dennis, Rocky, Beth, Angel— so a large amount of screen time was consumed by Jim, stopped at the side of the road, talking on a payphone.
Ahh, cellphones solved a real Writers’ Dilemma.
